2011

Seriously folks this was how our yard looked the Winter of 2010 before we started the homestead. Boring! Probably the main reason for me to get started was I couldn't stand how it looked. I needed some green, some life, some food! Notice the concrete pad and walkway that I always mention? It makes me happy to think how far we have come. It all happened because we did one simple thing. We took the first step. With a little work and a lot of curiosity we transformed this yard of nothing into an urban oasis.

And then it happened, one day we decided to be homesteaders...and our journey begins.
In the early Summer 2011, we decided to give straw bale gardening a try. We cut out the centers of the straw bales keeping the string bindings in tact. Filled the cavity with good soil, planted some seeds and waited. You know what happened? We got vegetables. It may not have been the most handsome of gardens but the purpose was to utilize our small space with something other than concrete and crab grass. We just wanted to enjoy our space however small it was. So we did. Now on to 2012 |
